There is a strong interdisciplinary research culture bringing historical and theoretical approaches to the study of film, television and screen media from silent and Hollywood film, to narrative features, documentary, avant-garde and experimental film. Research degrees differ from taught degrees in that most of the students' time is devoted to the individual pursuit of a research project. The students work independently carrying out research, experimentation and data-gathering in their chosen field. However, each student's supervisors will provide close support and mentoring throughout.
