Over the last 20 years, advances in life sciences, such as the ability to manipulate genetic material, have brought about a revolution and transformation of the biotechnology industry. The disciplines of biochemistry, cell biology, microbiology and molecular biology â?? all of which are core to biotechnology â?? represent some of the most rapidly changing, expanding and exciting of the sciences. This Masterâ??s course is intended for life science graduates who wish to develop their knowledge and skills in biosciences with an emphasis on biotechnology. It aims to provide excellent preparation for a wide range of careers within the biotechnology industry, as well as future research in biotechnology at PhD level. Biotechnology uses living cells and materials produced by cells to create products to benefit society. The science of biotechnology is also used to manipulate genetic information in animals, plants and microbes to alter them in some way that benefits people. Because biotechnology essentially uses the basic ingredients of life to make new products, it is both a cutting-edge technology and an applied science. Our experienced teaching team have extensive experience of laboratory research in microbiology, biosensors, biofuels, molecular biology, small-molecular inhibitors of viruses, ageing and bioremediation. Staff will bring their professional and research expertise into their teaching through the use of contemporary case studies. There is a focus on developing laboratory and other scientific skills, so laboratory sessions form a substantial component of the learning experience, enabling you to learn key experimental techniques and to develop essential experimental, data handling and reporting skills required in biological and other careers. Other scientific skills, such as literature researching, information technology, bioinformatics, data processing and the use of statistics are integrated within the course. If you choose the extended â??With Professional Experienceâ?? route, you will have the opportunity to gain substantive professional experience and have the option of applying for an internship with a host of different organisations or participate in supervised, campus-based projects. Internships are being organised with, for example, Cambridge Scientific Solutions, Lytegro, Warwick Ventures, Tickleâ??s Pickles and Severn Trent. Key Course Benefits
